Relevant Material:  “Frostbite occurs when the skin, and sometimes tissue beneath the skin, freezes due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

Frostbite is most common on the fingers, toes, nose, ears, cheeks and chin. Exposed skin in cold, windy weather is most vulnerable to frostbite. But frostbite can even occur on skin covered by gloves or other clothing.

Frostnip, the first stage of frostbite, doesn't cause permanent skin damage, according to the Mayo Clinic. You can treat very mild frostbite with first-aid measures, including rewarming your skin.

But more severe cases of frostbite require medical attention because it can damage skin, tissues, muscle and bones. Possible complications of severe frostbite include infection and nerve damage.

Here are some tips from the American Academy of Dermatology on how to prevent frostbite:

Dress in layers: Wearing loose, light layers helps trap warm air. The first layer should be made of a synthetic material which wicks moisture away from the body. The next layer should be wool or fleece which are good insulators. The top layer should be windproof and waterproof.

Protect feet and toes: Wear two pairs of socks. The first pair should be moisture-wicking fabric. Place a pair of wool or wool-blend socks on top of those.

Protect your head: Wear a heavy wool or fleece hat. On a bitterly cold day cover your face with a scarf or face mask.

Protect hands: Wear insulated gloves or mittens.

Make sure snow cannot get inside boots or clothing: Wet clothing increases the risk of developing frostbite. If you start to sweat while outdoors, cut back on your activity or unzip your jacket a bit.

Stay hydrated: Dehydration increases the risk of frostbite. Even if you are not thirsty drink at least one glass of water before going outside. Avoid alcohol which increases the risk of frostbite.

Recognize symptoms: The first signs include redness and a stinging, burning, throbbing or prickling sensation followed by numbness. If this occurs, head indoors immediately.

If you experience symptoms try to gradually bring feeling back to your body. Never rub frostbitten skin or submerge hands or feet directly into hot water. Use warm water or a warm washcloth instead.
